I told you that today I would be inviting a very special person to my blog. Well, to celebrate Mother's Day, here she is - my mum, Joy.
It has been rather hard to pin her down for this interview, and I think that after reading this you will know why!
Welcome to my blog, Mum. I hope you won’t mind telling my readers how old you will be this year.
I never think about my age. I’ve just worked it out - I’m 81
years, 5 months and 7 days. I don’t really believe it, I only feel 79.
I imagine that you
have had a very quiet year, slowing down a little, now that you are in your
ninth decade: knitting, a bit of pottering round the house or a snooze in
front of the TV - does that sound familiar?
It’s nice to have a
local theatre to go to now that you are at an age where you probably don’t like
to travel too far.
I usually travel to London two or three times a week. This
year, so far, I’ve seen nineteen plays, four musicals, one ballet, one opera,
four films, four concerts and three art exhibitions. I’m a ‘Theatre Angel’ so
I’ve also attended several first night after-show parties.
Aren’t you forgetting how spectacular it looks in the autumn
and Winter too? I’m afraid there’s only one, unpaid, gardener - me. As you've seen, it’s quite a large garden so I spend a lot of time composting, digging, planting,
weeding, pruning, dead heading and mowing to keep it looking like it does.
As you know, my new writing career has started to take off but a little bird tells me that you’ve had a bit of writing success in the past.
Welcome to my blog, Mum. I hope you won’t mind telling my readers how old you will be this year.
None of the above, I’m afraid - I’ve no time for them! I’m
too busy pursuing my various dramatic, cultural, artistic and agricultural activities;
reading books for my book club; studying plays for my play study group and
going to NADFAS lectures. The Archway Theatre also takes up a lot of my time.
You mention the
Archway Theatre. Am I right in presuming that you are taking more of a back
seat now after 58 years of membership?
Well, I act and direct. I have a very large part in the May
production and I shall be directing a play in December. I’m also in charge of
the theatre wardrobe, hiring out costumes ever Sunday morning; I’m a member of
the Archway Council of Management and the Repertory and Membership Committees.
As you know, my new writing career has started to take off but a little bird tells me that you’ve had a bit of writing success in the past.
Blimey what an inspiration to us all. Think your mum really has discovered the secret to a happy life. A really love post today. Hope you both have a terrific Mother's Day!
ReplyDeleteAnd I can see where you get all your energy and artistic talents from Wendy, a true chip off the maternal block x
Thanks Tracy. Mum will be reading all the comments but I will have to reply on her behalf.
DeleteHappy Mother's Day Wendy's Mum! What a lovely post and what an inspiration :-) x
ReplyDeleteThank you Teresa - and from my mum!
DeleteReading your Mum's interview Wendy, has cured me of any plans to procrastinate, for this Sunday at least. Now I feel energised enough to get down to some. I hope she has a great Mother's Day with many more to come. :-)
ReplyDeleteThanks John. My mum will ber really pleased to hear that she has inspired you to get on today.
ReplyDeleteHow wonderful to read that the secret to grow old isn't to see it as a number, but the number of things you can be doing with your time.
ReplyDeleteAll my very best wishes to you and your Mum, Wendy.
Thanks, Paula. I don't know how my mum fits all these things in!
DeleteThis is fantastic Wendy! Your Mum is a legend. My mother has been retired for 18mnths but is finding herself very bored - I might get her to read this to demonstrate that life, indeed, can really begin once you retire!
ReplyDeleteVery inspiring.
Take Care, Cat x
My mum will be very pleased to be called a legend, Cat! I hope your mum finds it inspiring if you show her.
DeleteBrilliant! Cat is right your mum is a legend (or a 'ledge' as they say here in Scotland). It's been a pleasure to meet her and I am SO looking forward to reading the Diana Poems - they sound so GREAT! Your mother sounds like she will never outlive her enthusiasm for life. This post has cheered me up on a very cold wintery day (and with the gas board letting us down!). Vive your mum, Joy, Wendy!
ReplyDeleteSorry to hear about your heating problems, Marianne - it's probably even colder there than it is here in the South (and it's freezing here -even Bonnie was happy to cut short her walk!) Maybe my mum will let us a have a sneak preview of one of the poems sometime. I'll ask her nicely!
DeleteYes, please, do ask her. Gas board problems resolved but we are now changing providers!
DeleteWhat an inspirational glamour-puss your mum is, Wendy! She clearly lives up to her name and good for her. Lovely post, thanks for sharing! I have a lovely Mum too but she wouldn't let me write about her! (although I have, indirectly, in a few stories!)
ReplyDeleteMy mum will be delighted to be called a 'glamour puss', Helen - I shall pass that on!
DeleteThat's brilliant, Wendy and Wendy's Mum!
ReplyDeleteShe's unstoppable. You have a lot to live up to, Wendy!
