Two Rants and a Rage


  • To the person who drove right up my bumper flashing their lights: Yes, I did see you when I pulled out of the side road (it would have been a safe distance if you hadn't been speeding). I also saw you when you carried on tailing me and flashing your lights. Strangely enough, I was still aware that you were annoyed when you over took me blaring your horn... I hope you, and your road rage, enjoyed your day.

  • To the dog owners who saw me put my dog on a lead and move off the path away from you and still allowed your four dogs to charge down the hill at Bonnie: What part of my non-verbal and verbal communication did you not understand?

  • To the postman who flinched at the glare I gave him as he handed over three stuffed envelopes with my handwriting on: Sorry, Mate... you should know that it is traditional to shoot the messenger.

Yes, dear readers... today I shall be wearing this.

    Oh Wendy! What a horrible day. As for rejections, I haven't written a short story for ages, but have just received an email from the fiction editor of a well known mag (think well worn theme, and then have a guess), to say that for the second time they have lost a story of mine. I love them dearly, but...

    Hope tomorrow's better.

      Thank you Pat. Actually my day did get better as I received an email from PF forwarding another email they'd received from a reader saying how much they'd enjoyed my story 'The Girl in the Photograph' - it made my day!

    Think you should send off a rant to Mslexia, Wendy (for their rant or rave short section) and turn it into print! Sorry to hear about the rejections on the same day, but at least you have lots of acceptances to balance it out! How lovely to receive that fan letter.

      I know I shouldn't complain about the rejections, Rosemary but I want new writers to know that everyone gets them and even us lucky ones with many published stories, get that rejected feeling from time to time and fight to move on from it. My lovely email certainly helped.

    When I sign for post I use my left hand - that way the postie doesn't know all those envelopes were addressed by me.

    Oh, dear not a good week, Wendy! I've had one rejection from Stinging fly (Irish mag), but mainly am NOT hearing anything about anything right now - which feels like a SILENT REJECTION on a major scale. I'll get in line for the T-shirt shall I?

      I do like green, ta. Also read the comment above about the reader's letter from PF - that easily cancels out ALL rejections. Why not have the letter printed on a T-shirt instead...

    I've read your latest stories too (2 in TABFF and the Woman's Weekly one - kept me guessing too! Enjoyed them all.) And I'm sorry, but you've got to have the odd rejection, just to give the rest of us a chance!!! Am sure some more acceptances are in the pipeline!

    Yikes--rough day. I can so relate! the good news is that the crappy days make all the other ones seem pretty awesome by comparison, right? :)
